Apply for SSC Funding

Funding Guidelines

Before starting your application, please review the following requirements for receiving SSC funding:

  • The money disbursed from this fund comes from student fees, so sustainability-related student impact is a necessary component for any proposal.
  • The SSC cannot apply retroactive funding; all budget items must occur after the meeting date where the proposal is reviewed.
  • Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis, but to be considered for a specific meeting, you must submit your application at least one week prior. Click here for the SSC meeting schedule.
  • If approved, the project leader has twelve months to spend the funds. If the project requires an extension beyond this timeline, a formal request must be submitted.
  • Student organizations must be actively registered with the Student Organizations and Activities Office to receive funding from the Student Sustainability Council.
  • Presenting the project to the Council is mandatory.
  • In order to preserve the Council's ability to effectively review and consider proposals we are limited in the number of proposals we may review per meeting. In the case that more proposals are received than can be reviewed for a given meeting, Council directors will decide which proposals are heard based on project timeline and order of submission.
  • Applicants are required to take part in one or more promotional opportunities to recognize the support received by the SSC. These opportunities include, but are not limited to: featuring the SSC logo on promotional material, social media promotion, authoring a WholeSum post, and participating in a Green Talks radio segment.
  • Approved projects require a final report upon project completion, including photos if applicable.

Funding Requirements

To maximize the impact of SSC funds, applicants are encouraged to seek additional funding sources. The Council follows these guidelines to assess whether a project has secured adequate outside funding for long-term sustainability.

Projects Under $1,000

  • No matching funding is required.

Projects Between $1,000 - $4,999

  • First-time funding: No alternate funding required.
  • Second-time funding: 25% of the project must be covered by an alternate source.
  • Third-time funding: 50% of the project must be covered by an alternate source.
  • Fourth-time (or more) funding: 75% of the project must be covered by an alternate source.

Projects $5,000 and Above

  • First-time funding: Applicants must have sought (but not necessarily secured) at least 25% of the total cost from an alternate source.
  • Second-time funding: 25% of the project must be covered by an alternate source.
  • Third-time funding: 50% of the project must be covered by an alternate source.
  • Fourth-time (or more) funding: 75% of the project must be covered by an alternate source.

Note: The Council may override these requirements with a two-thirds vote.
