Waste Management

Laboratories generate various types of waste including chemical, biological, and plastic waste. Oftentimes experiments require single-use materials such as disposable pipettes, petri dishes, gloves, syringes, and culture media to prevent contamination and ensure quality results. However, these items and their packaging lead to a significant amount of waste. When possible, using reusable materials is preferable; however, when that is not possible, ensuring that waste is disposed of properly can reduce the impact on the environment.

WASTE WIZARD

Various types of lab waste is shown: gloves, pads, plastic film, syringe, beakers, styrofoam coolers, napkins, pipette tip boxes, glassware

UK Recycling and Facilities Management has generated a Waste Wizard that tells users the proper way to dispose of materials. Click here to access the Waste Wizard.

Mindful Purchasing

Choosing consumables with recyclable packaging or purchasing in bulk to avoid excess packaging can reduce packaging waste. Choosing products with the ACT Environmental Impact Factor Label can help reduce the environmental impact of lab operations.
