Sustainability Internship Program: Communications Internship (paid $11/hour) 

The UK Center for Applied Energy Research is seeking a student intern this spring to assist our communications team. We are looking for a self-motivated, dependable, organized individual to help tell the CAER story, particularly the story of our graduate students. Many of our colleagues know that CAER does some amazing research that connects industry, academia and business. What is less known, however, is how much practical experience our chemistry, engineering, and mining students gain from the hands-on laboratories with real research. We need to tell these stories and highlight these wonderful people. We need your help, so apply today! 

We are offering a hybrid work opportunity for 8-10 hours per week for the spring semester. There will be necessary travel to our CAER campus on a weekly basis or so, but most of your work can be done remotely.

Specific Duties/Tasks:

• Create social media content that is people and story-driven, with elements of what makes our research at CAER important – energy efficiency, environmental stewardship, collaboration, and education. Must be very familiar with Instagram and Facebook. Other platforms are a plus. Approved postings at least 2-3 times per week on each platform.
• Research FB, Twitter, LinkedIn + Twitter for potential partnership stories, trends, and conversations we could be a part of
• Write one story (around 500 words or so) highlighting an aspect of CAER research. Topic can be of your choosing but must be approved by supervisor. Story process must include at least two recorded in-person or zoom interviews and 3-5 photos.
• Participate in the Sustainability Internship Program cohort by attending bi-weekly meetings. These meetings will include professional development training, networking, and socializing with other student sustainability interns. 

Preferable/Stretch Tasks:

• Work with Communications officer to create graphics and content for UKCAER Insta Stories to help improve community connection.
• Record simple B-Roll (video clips) and stock photos from the Center as needed
• Other duties as assigned. Potentially, event planning, basic graphic design, spot photography / video / writing / etc.

Learning Objectives: 

• Develop Project Management Skills
• Improve writing and graphic design skills for social media and online distribution
• Improve interview skills and reporting skills through interviews with researchers and graduate students
• Manage and execute complex projects that connect to our larger content strategy
• Have a strong portfolio piece when internship is complete

Other Objectives:

• Improve photography / videography skills

Student Sustainability Council: At-Large and Student Organization Positions 

Applications for the Spring 2022 Semester are due on November 12th by 11:59pm.

The SSC is composed of at-large seats and seats filled by representatives from participating student organizations. There are two ways to become a voting member of the Student Sustainability Council: at-large and as an organizational representative. Elections are held each semester for at-large seats the following semester or year. Organizations are accepted each Spring. Find more about the application process for both below, and keep an eye out on social media (@ukyssc) for live updates on elections!

• At-Large Seats 
  • Apply to be an at-large member. Please send a resume and cover letter as separate PDFs titled "yourlastname.resume and yourlastname.coverletter" to  UKStudentSustainabilityCouncil@gmail.com with the subject "SSC At Large Application". Your resume should succinctly outline your education, service, and work background and include awards and recognition. Your cover letter should detail your interest and experience regarding sustainability and clearly explain why you are interested in an at-large seat on the Council.

• ​Student Organization Representative
  • Represent your student organization on the council. In an effort to promote broad and diverse participation in the distribution of the environmental stewardship fee, the SSC includes seats dedicated to representatives from registered student organizations. Each spring groups that would like to have a seat on the council can apply. Download the application.
