Microplastic Madness Film Screening
Community members are invited to a free screening of the documentary Microplastic Madness, an optimistic take on the plastic pollution crisis as told through the eyes of a group of school children. Common Threads LEX, a new sustainability-focused partnership between the City of Lexington, the University of Kentucky and Fayette County Public Schools, is hosting the screening. This is Common Threads LEX’s inaugural event.
The film showing will take place on Tuesday, March 24 at the Kentucky Theater, 214 East Main Street. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with the film beginning at 7 p.m. The film showing is free, but tickets must be reserved in advance. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to visit with local environmental groups before the film. The event will also feature a plastic-free swap. Bring or take reusable food-related items, such as water bottles, metal straws or travel coffee cups.
Microplastic Madness follows a class of fifth graders from PS 15 in Red Hook, Brooklyn as they spend two years investigating plastic pollution. Taking on the roles of citizen scientists, community leaders, and advocates, they take a deep dive into the root causes of plastic pollution. They take action to rid their cafeteria of single-use plastic, driving forward city-wide action and a scalable, youth-led plastic-free movement.
A panel discussion will follow the film with representatives from local organizations, the University of Kentucky, FCPS and UK student leadership. This event is part of Lexington’s seventh annual Water Week, a celebration of local waterways and our role in protecting them.
