Make an impact tackling plastic pollution in Memphis, Tennessee over spring break
Spend your spring break making a meaningful impact in Memphis, Tennessee, with Alternative Service Breaks (ASB), exploring the urgent issue of plastic pollution and its impact on local ecosystems. This immersive experience centers on hands-on sustainability work where participants will partner with community organizations to support conservation efforts, learn about environmental inequities, and explore how sustainability practices can protect both ecosystems and the people who depend on them. From hands-on service projects to guided discussions, students will gain real-world insight into how environmental issues connect to public health, economic access, and social responsibility.
Partnering with Living Lands & Waters, a national nonprofit dedicated to restoring and protecting America’s rivers, students will take part in meaningful environmental service throughout the Memphis region. Living Lands & Waters focuses on removing trash and plastic waste from waterways, restoring natural habitats, and promoting long-term environmental stewardship through education and community engagement. Students will assist with debris removal from regional waterways, support restoration efforts, and learn firsthand how plastic pollution threatens aquatic ecosystems, wildlife, and surrounding communities. Through this partnership, participants will also explore how grassroots conservation efforts can drive sustainable change and empower communities to protect their natural resources.
Beyond the sustainability focus, ASB trips are designed to be immersive, supportive, and impactful. Every group is led by trained site leaders who guide daily volunteer work, facilitate meaningful reflection, and foster a strong sense of community through group activities. These leaders help ensure that students feel prepared, supported, and safe throughout the entire experience.
The cost of the trip is $300, covering everything from food to transportation and housing. Scholarships are available, making this opportunity accessible to as many students as possible.
ASB is more than just a trip—it’s a chance to support communities, learn from lived experiences, and connect with fellow UK students in a structured, purpose-driven environment. With limited spots available, the ASB team is currently looking for a few more participants to join the Memphis trip.
If you’re interested in spending your spring break doing work that matters while building friendships and gaining valuable perspective, we strongly encourage you to consider ASB for your spring break plans. There are spots open for students to attend, as well as staff advisors.
