UK TreeFest
UK TreeFest is a special event taking place on Wednesday, October 14th, from 12–3 p.m. in the green space by Kirwan Blanding and Ingels Hall. The event is co-hosted by UK Sustainability, UK Canopy Cats, Urban Forest Initiative, UK Campus Recreation, and UK Grounds, and funded by the Student Sustainability Council.
The event will consist of three components:
- Canopy Cats: Canopy Cats will provide students with the hands-on experience of climbing the large oak tree outside KB. Safety gear and climbing equipment will be provided during a 45-minute run down of how to climb a tree. Each student will have the opportunity to put on a harness, learn about what equipment is needed and how to use it, and climb a rope up into the oak. Register in advance for a climbing spot.
- Sustainability Tabling: Sustainability-related student orgs will be invited to table near the site to spread awareness of their mission and recruit potential new members.
- Tree Planting: A diverse mix of 6 new native trees will be purchased and planted at locations approved by the arboriculture team. Students are invited to participate in the planting process and learn more about urban forestry and UK’s tree canopy. Students will help dig holes, plant new trees, refill the holes, and water the trees.
